What is it?

Learning Locker Enterprise stores data for query up to two years. After the second year, older data can be deprecated to a Data Lake (for use with something like Amazon Redshift or Google BigQuery), allowing for historical queries into the future, but avoiding additional charges for data storage over the long term for xAPI.

Why would I need it?

You will need to think about a data archiving strategy as a part of your Learning Records lifecycle. Some data can be deleted; you may have no purpose for it beyond a certain point in time and most would consider it data security best practices to securely remove any data that you no longer need from your regular data stores.

How does it work?

Once we’ve devised your archiving strategy we work out the best process by which we can forward data on from the Learning Record Store to a ‘flat file’ format. This might mean real-time processing from Learning Locker or, perhaps more likely, a batch process to run on a weekly / monthly basis.

We can transfer this older data to your own established Data Lake, or use our own hosted / managed Data Lake system. Either way, once the data is transferred we can make the archived data available to query using a HDFS approach, such as those provided by Redshift / BigQuery. We then remove the older data from the live LRS, keeping your overall storage cost down.

What will it cost?

There are usage costs associated with the managed Data Lake services and query tools like Redshift and Big Query. We can quote based on the scale of your need and your on-prem / hosted approach.
